In care home settings, the language we use shapes the experiences, dignity, and identity of the people we support. Person-centred language is more than just a set of words - it's a reflection of respect, empathy, and a commitment to seeing each individual as a whole person, not just a diagnosis or condition.
This document aims to explore the importance of using person-centred language in care homes, offering practical guidance on how to communicate in ways that promote autonomy, individuality, and inclusion. By adopting language that honours each resident's unique history, preferences, and needs, care teams can foster stronger relationships, improve emotional well-being, and create more compassionate and empowering environments.
Whether you're a caregiver, manager, or support staff member, understanding and applying person-centred language is a key step toward delivering truly person-centred care.
Fusion Brain Boosters have been designed as quick, easy reference documents suitable for any staff member working in a care home. They can be used to reinforce knowledge and increase awareness of conditions and risks associated with healthcare. Some information may be new, or it could be simply refreshing information previously gained. They can be printed off and put on a staff noticeboard, used as supervision documents (either in 121’s or in group settings) or used as reflective documents to encourage discussion within teams in the care setting. Please share them with your colleagues and we would love to get your feedback using the buttons below…….
