Managing the risk of choking in care settings

Choking prevention in care homes is a critical aspect of ensuring the safety and well-being of residents, particularly those who are elderly or have medical conditions that affect their swallowing abilities. Many care home residents may be at higher risk of choking due to factors like frailty, dementia, stroke, or neurological disorders. As such, it's essential for care providers to implement comprehensive strategies to minimise choking risks.

By identifying any risks and implementing preventive measures, care homes can significantly reduce the chances of choking incidents and enhance the overall safety and well-being of their residents, thus ensuring residents remain safe and receive appropriate person centred care tailored to their needs.

Fusion Brain Boosters have been designed as quick, easy reference documents suitable for any staff member working in a care home. They can be used to reinforce knowledge and increase awareness of conditions and risks associated with healthcare. Some information may be new, or it could be simply refreshing information previously gained. They can be printed off and put on a staff noticeboard, used as supervision documents (either in 121’s or in group settings) or used as reflective documents to encourage discussion within teams in the care setting. Please share them with your colleagues and we would love to get your feedback using the buttons below…….
