COVID-19 Vaccination: What Care Homes Need to Know (Spring 2025)
Keeping our residents safe is always the top priority. Here's why COVID-19 vaccination remains essential in care homes this year.
Why Vaccination Matters in Care Homes & Protecting Our Most Vulnerable:
Residents in care homes are more at risk of severe illness from COVID-19. Vaccination helps prevent:
- Serious complications
- Hospital stays
- Death
- Boosting Immunity Over Time
Even if someone has had COVID-19 or been vaccinated before, protection fades. Boosters:
- Renew immune strength
- Are updated for current variants
- Reducing Outbreaks
- Vaccinated residents and staff are less likely to spread the virus, helping to keep everyone safer and reduce outbreaks.
Who Is Eligible in Spring 2025?
- Residents aged 75 and older.
- All older adult care home residents.
- Individuals aged 6 months+ who are immunosuppressed.
- Staff may be offered vaccines in specific settings — check local guidance.
- The NHS will visit care homes directly to deliver vaccinations where possible.
- Benefits Beyond COVID
- A combined flu and COVID-19 vaccine is expected soon (possibly winter 2025–26). This could mean one simple vaccination each year for better protection.
What to Do
- Encourage eligible residents and families to consent early.
- Ensure staff know the signs of COVID and keep infection control practices strong.
- Liaise with local NHS teams to arrange your care home’s vaccine clinic.
