Reduce falls in care homes with better vision care, hearing checks, and safe footwear choices. Protect residents and improve wellbeing.
Falls are a major health concern for older people in care settings, often leading to injury, loss of independence, and reduced quality of life. As care home staff, you play a vital role in recognising and reducing risks that can lead to falls.
Many factors contribute to falls in older residents, including changes in vision, hearing difficulties, medical conditions such as diabetes, arthritis, or heart disease, and the side effects of certain medications. Footwear and foot health are also important - poorly fitting shoes, foot pain, or untreated conditions such as corns or nail problems can all affect stability and increase the chance of tripping or slipping.
By being alert to these risks and supporting residents with practical adjustments, safe footwear, foot care, and regular monitoring, you can help create a safer environment. Proactive falls prevention not only protects residents’ health and wellbeing but also helps maintain their confidence and independence.
Fusion Brain Boosters have been designed as quick, easy reference documents suitable for any staff member working in a care home. They can be used to both reinforce knowledge and increase awareness of conditions and risks associated with healthcare. Some information may be new, or it could be simply refreshing information previously gained. They can be printed off and put on a staff noticeboard, used as supervision documents (either in 121’s or in group settings) or used as reflective documents to encourage discussion within teams in the care setting. Please share them with your colleagues and we would love to get your feedback using the buttons below…….
