Introduction to Infection Prevention and Control in Care Homes

Infection prevention and control (IPC) is a fundamental part of delivering safe and effective care in care homes. Residents are often more vulnerable to infections due to age, underlying health conditions, and the close nature of communal living. Preventing the spread of infection protects residents, staff, families, and visitors, while also helping to reduce hospital admissions and pressure on health services.

This document sets out the principles and practices of IPC in care homes, in line with UK legislation and national guidance. It outlines the responsibilities of staff, the standards expected in daily care, and the measures required to manage and reduce infection risks. By embedding IPC into routine practice, care homes can maintain a safe, supportive, and dignified environment for all who live and work within them.

Fusion Brain Boosters have been designed as quick, easy reference documents suitable for any staff member working in a care home. They can be used to both reinforce knowledge and increase awareness of conditions and risks associated with healthcare. Some information may be new, or it could be simply refreshing information previously gained. They can be printed off and put on a staff noticeboard, used as supervision documents (either in 121’s or in group settings) or used as reflective documents to encourage discussion within teams in the care setting. Please share them with your colleagues and we would love to get your feedback using the buttons below…….
