Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD) is a long-term condition where the kidneys gradually lose their ability to filter waste, balance fluids, and regulate important minerals in the body. In the UK, CKD is common among older adults, and care home residents are often at higher risk due to age, long-term health conditions, or medication use.
Early stages of CKD are often silent, with few obvious symptoms. This makes careful observation and timely reporting by care staff essential to protecting residents’ health. Subtle changes in urine, appetite, energy levels, or swelling can provide important clues that allow healthcare professionals to identify CKD early and manage it effectively.
This document aims to equip care home staff with practical knowledge about CKD — from understanding kidney function and recognising early signs, to supporting residents through daily care practices that protect kidney health. By fostering awareness and vigilance, care homes can play a vital role in preventing complications, maintaining quality of life, and promoting wellbeing for residents living with, or at risk of, chronic kidney disease.
Fusion Brain Boosters have been designed as quick, easy reference documents suitable for any staff member working in a care home. They can be used to reinforce knowledge and increase awareness of conditions and risks associated with healthcare. Some information may be new, or it could be simply refreshing information previously gained. They can be printed off and put on a staff noticeboard, used as supervision documents (either in 121’s or in group settings) or used as reflective documents to encourage discussion within teams in the care setting. Please share them with your colleagues and we would love to get your feedback using the buttons below…….
