Managing IDDSI and Texture-Modified Diets in Care Homes

Introduction to IDDSI and Texture-Modified Diets in Care Homes

Ensuring residents can eat and drink safely is a vital part of high-quality care in care homes. Many older adults experience dysphagia, or difficulty swallowing, which can increase the risk of choking, malnutrition, and dehydration. The International Dysphagia Diet Standardisation Initiative (IDDSI) provides a clear, evidence-based framework to standardise texture-modified diets and thickened fluids, helping care staff support residents with swallowing difficulties safely and consistently. By following IDDSI guidance, care homes can improve resident safety, dignity, and nutritional wellbeing, while ensuring compliance with national care standards.

Fusion Brain Boosters have been designed as quick, easy reference documents suitable for any staff member working in a care home. They can be used to reinforce knowledge and increase awareness of conditions and risks associated with healthcare. Some information may be new, or it could be simply refreshing information previously gained. They can be printed off and put on a staff noticeboard, used as supervision documents (either in 121’s or in group settings) or used as reflective documents to encourage discussion within teams in the care setting. Please share them with your colleagues and we would love to get your feedback using the buttons below…….
