Carers Week – 9-15 June 2025
As we mark Carers Week (June 9–15, 2025), it's time to shine a light not only on unpaid carers but also on the incredible contribution of care home workers—those whose dedication, compassion, and skill support some of the most vulnerable people in our communities every single day.
This year’s theme, “Putting Carers on the Map,” is a powerful reminder that all care home staff are carers. Whether you're a nurse, support worker, activity coordinator, cleaner, or chef—your work is essential, and your care matters.
Why This Week Matters to You
Care home workers are often overlooked in national conversations about carers. Yet you are there 365 days a year, often working long shifts, managing complex needs, and offering companionship, dignity, and humanity to those in your care.
Carers Week is a chance to:
Recognise and celebrate your role as professional carers.
Raise awareness of the challenges care staff face.
Push for fair pay, proper staffing, and mental health support.
Connect with wider care communities and know you're not alone.
The Reality of Working in Care Homes
Working in a care home is not just a job—it’s a vocation. But that doesn't mean it’s easy.
You manage physical care, emotional support, and sometimes end-of-life needs.
You build strong bonds with residents and families.
You often work under pressure, with limited resources and increasing expectations.
And you do it all with patience, humour, and heart.
It’s a role that deserves recognition, respect, and proper support—not just during Carers Week, but always.
How We Can Better Support Care Home Workers
Carers Week is a time for action as well as celebration. Here's how we can make a difference:
Policy changes: Push for reforms in funding, training, and working conditions.
Respect and recognition: Ensure care work is seen as skilled and valuable.
Workplace wellbeing: Promote mental health support, team appreciation, and fair workloads.
Career development: Create clear pathways for growth and leadership in the sector.
A Thank You to Care Home Teams
If you're reading this and you work in a care home, this message is for you:
Thank you.
Thank you for your resilience.
Thank you for showing up—even when it's hard.
Thank you for being a lifeline to so many.
You are not just carers—you are champions of dignity, kindness, and humanity.
This Carers Week, we see you. We value you. And we stand with you.
Let’s keep raising our voices to ensure care home workers are firmly on the map—not just as essential workers, but as essential people.
